Family: Enigma was raised by his parents, Rachel and Gavin Sanford. He had a brother and a sister, both younger than him. His grandfather lived with the family and would often tell the children tales of heroes he had met when he was younger and working as a bard.
His family was happy for him when he went to study at the Guild and often sent him letters and presents because they couldn't visit thanks to Hook Coast's remote location.
When Enigma graduated and started showing signs of not quite being the sweet little boy that had left for the guild, his family worried about him and tried to convince him to come home. However, he refused and continued to run around Albion causing havoc with another hero named Maelstrom.
When his family received news that Enigma and Maelstrom had finally gone too far and robbed and killed a number of traders in Greatwood, they finally decided to cut all ties and disowned him.
Character History: After graduating from the Guild at the age of eighteen, Enigma and a friend he had made during his time at the Heroes Guild, Maelstrom, set off together to begin their new lives as heroes. Maelstrom had been a constant negative influence on Enigma since they day they had met, but never the less, Enigma was fond of him and allowed himself to be led along down ever darker paths.
The two of them started stealing and harassing people, using their titles as heroes to get away with just about anything. They worked hard for the Guild, amassing a fair amount of gold, and whenever they committed a crime they simply threw money at it and walked away free. They grew arrogant and vicious, caring about no one but each other. Their relationship gradually changed from platonic friendship into something more sensual.
Eventually, they drifted from simple theft to more serious crimes, such as assault. Soon, no town would allow them past their gates and the pair resorted to haunting the forests and roads. They settled down in Greatwood for a while, preying on helpless traders.
It wasn’t long before the Guild sent another hero to deal with them. Enigma caught wind of this and he and Maelstrom made a run for it, fleeing to Oakvale and sneaking to the docks. They stowed away on a ship and where soon headed for foreign lands.
They travelled around like this for a while, from the Northern Wastes to Samarkand to other places they’d never heard of before, exploring these new lands in fascination. For a while they were so amazed by everything that they even refrained from terrorizing the locals. It was while they were travelling that Enigma found Riddle, then just a puppy, and convinced Maelstrom to let him keep her.
Finally, when the fascination wore off, they returned to their old, wicked ways. One day, while in Samarkand, they were stealing from a seemingly mundane house on the outskirts of a town when they owner returned home. She was old and appeared to be perfectly harmless. Maelstrom threatened her, telling her to leave or be killed but she didn’t move, apparently completely unfazed by his weapons.
They found out why when she threw him across the room without even touching him. She was a will user.
Since Enigma was also a will user, Maelstrom told him to deal with her. A number of people had pinned Enigma as a prodigy when it came to powers of will, but despite that he was still very young and couldn’t hope to beat the woman. The fight was short and ended with Enigma slumped against the wall beside Maelstrom, exhausted. As a punishment, the woman took his eyesight.
Before she could punish Maelstrom too, he picked up Enigma and fled the town, heading back to their camp where Riddle was waiting. Enigma was panicking by this point, muttering to himself as he tried to figure out a way to return his eyesight, but nothing was working and he was only exhausting himself further. Eventually, Maelstrom just knocked him out and left him to sleep for a while.
When Enigma woke up again he was calmer and more accepting of his situation. Maelstrom offered to help him train Riddle to guide him until they figured out a way to return his eyesight to him. They travelled back to the Northern Wastes and for the next year worked on training Riddle. It was difficult, because neither of them knew what they were doing, but eventually they succeeded.
After a short while, they reluctantly decided to go crawling home to the Heroes Guild with their tails between their legs when they realised that with Enigma’s new handicap they couldn’t really continue on as they were. They returned to Albion and after a great deal of punishment and ostracizing they were slowly accepted back into the Guild.
However, Maelstrom missed the way things used to be and despite his affections for Enigma, eventually decided to leave to continue travelling by himself. He left a message with one of the other heroes for Enigma then disappeared in the middle of the night without saying goodbye. When Enigma found out the next day, he was heartbroken and distraught, knowing that without his eyesight he would never be able to find Maelstrom again.
Alone now, with Riddle as his only friend in the world, Enigma decided he would find the woman who had taken his sight and force her to fix him. Then he would find Maelstrom again and things could return to the way they had been.
Personality: Enigma isn’t as malicious as he used to be. Maelstrom’s disappearance has left him bitter and angry, but he hides it all behind a mask of sarcasm and disdain. He rarely connects with the people he meets and cares little for the lives of others.
Despite this, he does show a soft spot for Riddle and tends to let his guard down slightly around children. He dislikes being around families though, because it reminds him of his own, who he now misses terribly.
Sample RP: It was already growing dark as Enigma left the Guild Woods. He could tell by the smell of the air; how it grew crisper as the temperature dropped. He took a deep breath and winced as it stung his throat.
Beside him, Riddle pranced along happily, yapping and whining at him. In the Guild Enigma didn't require her to guide him as he knew his way around the place so well. Never-the-less, she still stuck very close to him, occasionally bumping against the side of his leg.
Just as he set foot on the bridge across to the Guild proper, Riddles yaps and whines gave way to a single low snarl. Enigma froze in the act of taking a step and turned his head to the side slightly, listening. His hands flexed at his sides, his fingertips prickling with electricity.
"Who's there..?" He growled softly.
((Guh, sorry for the EPIC NOVEL that is the history...))
